I’ll be honest with you, my Facebook told me to listen to Emeli Sande. Typically I ignore creepy suggestions from the Facebook marketing team, but Jay-Z called her the “next big thing” so I gave it a shot. While I am not the biggest Jay-Z fan I do respect his musical opinions. From what I see and read he appears to be a pretty cultured man. He has sampled Otis Redding, mentioned The Grateful Dead and according to his Life + Times blog he apparently listens to Boyz Noise and Le1f so I trust the guy.
When I searched for Emeli Sande her record “Daddy” appeared first. As a native of London which is home to some of the best musicians in music I went in with high expectations. I was instantly impressed with her vocal skills but not entirely sold on the production. Her soul-pop sound felt like a blend of Jill Scott, Adele and Chrisette Michele. After searching around for more music from the rising star, I found a Disclosure remix of “Daddy” and now I can’t stop playing it. The Disclosure version strips most of the original vocals for an upbeat dance track that proves it is impossible for the duo to present bad material.
You better jump on the Emeli Sande train now before Top 40 gets hold of her. I am surprised they have not already since her 2012 debut album “Our Vision of Love” is loaded with fantastic soul pop tracks and was a bestselling album in Europe.
