Monday, October 21st of this year marks a decade since Elliott Smith was found with a knife in his chest. He and his girlfriend had been arguing in 2003 and she locked herself in the bathroom to take a shower. When she came out, she found Elliott and pulled the knife from his chest. She also found a Post-it that read “I’m so sorry – Love, Elliott. God Forgive me.” Elliott was 34.
There is still speculation to this day about whether he actually committed suicide, or was murdered. Smith had been very open in the past about his struggles with addiction and depression, so suicide seems like the logical answer. His heartbreaking end almost seems fitting to the melancholy tone of his music.
Although the only mainstream notoriety he ever achieved was a nerve-racking performance of “Miss Misery” at the 1998 Oscars, his music still lives on and attracts new listeners every year.
